In search of Magnolia

A movie blog. Searching for the thrill I first experienced when I saw Magnolia by P.T. Anderson. I'll try to review every movie I see, good or bad, and top that with some other movie related stuff.

More inception. I reviewed the movie here.
Today I bumped onto this sketch that Nolan created / used to keep track of the main dream sequence. That’s an interesting inside view!

Inception

Wow, what a movie!

I know opinions about this movie are divided, but I consider it a masterpiece. Yes I’m late to the party. I must be the absolute last person on earth to see it, but here we are. I rarely see a movie in theaters anyway, so I spend 6 euro’s yesterday to my VOD provider to see it in HD. What a blast!

This picture fixes Christopher Nolan a bit firmer in my list of favorite directors. 10 years after the brilliant Memento (2000), his breakthrough, a revelation, he surprises the world again, big time. Not that he failed in the meantime. The Prestige (2006) is on my favorite movie list and what he did with the last two Batman movies was pretty good as well.

Inception (2010) has it all. The puzzles and suspense of Memento and The Prestige, and the production quality / effects of the Batman movies. Super slick!

You need to stay focused, at least in the beginning. It’s on the edge of getting too complicated from time to time, but it plays out nice when the puzzle fits together. And when it starts making sense, you realize how big it is. People keep comparing it to The Matrix (1999). The red pill indeed!

The movie is about dream-detectives, or dream-spies, or whatever you wanna call them. They trick you into a dream they design themselves, and you fill in the details, your secrets, so they can steal them. Stealing information is one thing, planting ideas another (incept the, really). A very powerful weapon when use wrong. The ultimate persuasion, because it’s done by yourself. And this is exactly the mission, the final one, the team is up to. In a quest for redemption, lead by Cobb, the main character played by Leonardo DiCaprio  who establishes himself as A-class superior actor far far away from female eyecandy.

One of the best elements they play with in the movie is the notion of time. A dream is more intense, more dense, and so is time. And if you initiate dreams, in dreams, and even one level further .. a lot of (brain) time passes. So 10 hours in reality could be decades on the deepest level. This combined with the influence the different levels have on each other (for example falling in level 1, will have a effect on level 2 .. but much slower) is the source of sublime photography.

Very good! More!
