Not that I watched only crappy flicks the last couple of months, I actually watched shit. Shit as in nothing, not crap.

But tonight I had to watch, free coupon, only valid today. Limited choice, and I ended up choosing between Source Code and Sucker Punch. Actually, I am quite curious about Sucker Punch as well. You know, a Zack Snyder piece. Love him or hate him. I adored 300 and kinda loved Watchman as well. His style is just interesting. Out of the ordinary, heavily saturated, unreal, yet he creates a world you’ll easily become part of. At least, I am, but I can imagine it’s not everybody’s cup of tea.

Then there was Source Code. Jake Gyllenhaal, big asset. I guess I’m hooked since Donnie Darko, he can’t seem to do anything wrong. But I saw and advert of this movie on a bus! If it’s advertised on a bus it can’t be any good right, or can it? Then I discovered the movie was directed by Duncan Jones, you know Bowie’s kid who really impressed me with Moon. So I decided to give it a fair shot and forget about the bus.

Without giving too much away, the movie is about a situation that repeats itself. There’s a bom on a train, and because of some technical quantum mambo jambo they succeed in sending someone back in time to find out what actually happend. They need to find the bomber, because the train is only the beginning. Next bomb will be nuclear and hit Chicago full force.

So yes, this keeps on repeating, sending him back and forth. Different choices are made with different results, only to discover the bomber in the end and prevent the nuclear attack. You could’ve guessed that right? That’s not what makes the movie interesting. What does is the discovering of the mission, and the way the main character reacts on that. And most interesting is when everything is set .. the hero doesn’t feel like one because he feels he failed in saving the people in this different reality that already ceased to exist. He wants to go back, save them all, even if there’s no use. It’s interesting because after 2 movies, we start to see Duncan Jones theme here. Obviously he’s obsessed with the notion of reality versus consciousness versus valuation of life. He played with these subjects in Moon, and he does it again here.

I liked the movie, recommend viewing it. Forget about the technical details, you don’t need to understand them and they don’t make sense anyway. People compare it to The Matrix, and yes it compares to The Matrix a Fiat compares to a Ferrari: there’s a correlation, but it’s weak, it’s an other game, other accents. In The Matrix you need to understand the mechanics, it’s about the mechanics. Here the mechanics are a necessary evil. You’ll buy it because it’s needed for the story.

Anyway, he got Gyllenhaal and a decent production budget so it seems .. I think Duncan Jones is heading in the right direction. Curious to see what this guy might bring us next, when he’s getting acces to a-list resources. Bring it on!

Oh, here’s the trailer. Nice style.

Yep, the full movie. Enjoy, one of the best flicks ever made.

Kudos to Sony Pictures for doing this!

Blow

How funny (or easy, schmuck, ..) would it be to claim that Blow (2001) blows. Except it doesn’t.

I have this movie in my rack for ages. Finally came to watch it because a somewhat younger very promising colleague, Renaat, pitched it. Well pitched, he called this his favorite movie in some casual talking, and I was like .. WHUT? Sure, there must’ve been a reason to buy this movie. Featuring Johnny Depp .. he rarely ends up in really sucky movies. Or maybe I heard some good critics about it. Or it was irresistible cheap. Whatever the case, I bought it but never watched it.

Renaat admitted there might have been some nostalgic feelings. Back from the old days. It’s like my Natural Born Killers (1994). When I saw this flick in theaters, age 14, this forever changed my view on cinema.

Time to give Blow a chance.

Renaat described it as a bit airy. Less serious than for example Scarface (1983). I see what he means. It’s one of these movies that have the main character giving offscreen comments. Telling a story so to say. Yes these movies have a certain flair, but in this case I wouldn’t call it all airy or light or whatever. The form of the story is less serious .. like the movie is putting itself in perspective, I sure can appreciate that. But after seeing it I dare to describe the movie in general as a bit harsh.

It’s a movie about ambition. How great and easy it is to follow your dreams, as long as you are bright enough and willing to work for it. But soon this ambition is leaving itself behind, turning in greed. Greed creating false friends, wrong judgements and a very narrow perspective. This obviously ends in hostility, pragmatic love and betrayal.

Blow is the story of George Yung, building a drugs empire in the 70s on the American west coast. Yung discovers throughout the movie what true values are, but he’s in to deep. He can’t escape the beast he created himself.

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie. But no, obviously I wouldn’t call it the best movie I ever saw :) Although Johnny Depp get extra points for his hilarious hair style. For Renaat, and others, if you like the style of this movie I definitely like to recommend 2 titles to you

Boogie Nights (1997). From P.T. Anderson, the guy who made the movie this blog is named after. Boogie Nights is about the climb and fall of the porn industry. It’s worth solid gold!

Goodfellas (1990). Bit back in the crime scene, the mafia in this case. It’s about the ambitious kid (Ray Liotta, who plays the father of George Yung in Blow) who is climbing up into the organization. Scorsese at his best.

Oh, and if you like eclectic movies, make sure to check out the Guy Ritchie movies before he fucked Madonna. Lock Stock and especially Snatch (with Brad Pitt in a very funny role). They’re epic.

Quentin Tarantino on the inspiration for Pulp Fiction.

So, I finally got around to seeing the new Karate Kid, and was really pleased to find out that it was the story all about how Jaden Smith’s life got flipped turned upside down. You see, he was chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool, shooting some b-ball outside of his school, when a couple of guys (who were up to no …good) started making trouble in his neighbourhood. He got in one little fight and his mom got scared! And said “You’re going to learn kung-fu from the maintenance man downstairs.”

You got to guess 50 movies, based on 3 clue images. That’s images not from the movie itself, but that for sure are related.

My score: 40/50

Pretty curious about the ones I couldn’t decipher. Help me out?
