In search of Magnolia

A movie blog. Searching for the thrill I first experienced when I saw Magnolia by P.T. Anderson. I'll try to review every movie I see, good or bad, and top that with some other movie related stuff.

Parallel Lines

Last year, Philips made the most amazing commercial to promote their high quality, cinema like tv-sets. It was called “Carousel”

This year, they raised the bar. Not in execution (Carousel is still beyond awesome in my mind) but in opening up the idea. They didn’t make 1 movie, they made 5. At least, they had them made by 5 different directors, selected and supported by the Ridley Scott Association (RSA). Yes, the same Ridley Scott that directed Blade Runner, Gladiator and American Gangster. Top class Hollywood. The RSA is there to support beginning directors, and I can imagine getting help from the man himself or his entourage could be a golden opportunity.

The trick with the 5 movies is they all have the same lines. This was the only brief: use the same 6 lines of text, then do as you please.

I had the chance to go to the launch event here in Belgium and see the 5 movies in premiere, and I have to say there were some pieces I likes quite a lot. The event as well was organized flawless. Biggest surprise at the event was the announcement of a contest: we can all compete ourselves! Yes, you as well! You can make your movie, have it shortlisted, have it evaluated by Ridley Scott, .. who know where you might get!! When I get my DSLR I might give it a shot.

So here are the 5 movies.

The Hunt, by Jake Scott

This movie is directed by Ridley Scott’s son. I’m not too fond on it, I think it’s a bit too obvious given the lines. Too American maybe?

Darkroom, by Johnny Hardstaff

This short is my favorite! I think it’s a perfect balance between technology/visual effects, suspense, surprise, .. The lines are used in a far more original way!

El Secret de Mateo, by Greg Fay

A lot of people at the event told me this was their favorite. I can see why: it’s honest, low tech, and an original interpretation of the lines. Apart from the idea, I kind of missed some depth.

Jun & the Hidden Skies, by Hi-Sim

Pure fantasy! The directors duo who made this was present at the event.

The Gift, by Carl Eric Rinsch

Pure visual/fx this was top of the bill, but I have to say the effects took over the movie once too many. Nice shots though.

So, if you want to claim a spot in this nice list, give it a shot. All information can be found at http://www.philips.com/cinema or check the youTube channel that’s dressed-up very neat.
