In search of Magnolia

A movie blog. Searching for the thrill I first experienced when I saw Magnolia by P.T. Anderson. I'll try to review every movie I see, good or bad, and top that with some other movie related stuff.

The hurt locker

What’s the fuzz about?

It’s a war movie. There are many war movies. Some not as good, and some far better. But I mean 6 Oscars? WTF!

It must be an all American thing, there is no other explanation. Maybe this is the best inside view on Iraq and the situation there. Something very meaningful for American citizen, “our boys in Iraq”, right? There’s the patriotic feeling, the heroism. Right up their alley.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t judge that feeling, but I assume you need to have it to fully appreciate the movie. And I don’t have it.

There’s moments in the movie that really grab you though. You feel the tension in your gut. Then there’s other moment that are a bit boring. So everything put together, from an outside view, it’s a reasonable war movie. Nothing more, nothing less.

One of the very first scenes is pretty good though, an explosion in full detail. Setting the expectation: you’re hoping the movie will have more of these scenes, but unfortunately it doesn’t.

The Hurt Locker (2008) is directed by Kathryn Bigelow, ex-wife of James Cameron who at the same Oscars was competing her with Avatar. He lost, only got 3 of them. And the Hurt Locker got best picture. But Avatar is in the IMDB top 250 list, and THL isn’t. Still haven’t seen Avatar though, so can’t make my own judgement, yet.
